Welcome ceremony for new doctoral candidates at the University of Jena – 100 beginning doctoral candidates were welcomed

The Graduate Academy of Friedrich Schiller University Jena organised the welcome ceremony for new doctoral candidates on 29 October 2014. At the ceremony "Willkommen zur Promotion"/ "Welcome to the doctorate", circa 100 beginning doctoral candidates of the year 2014 were welcomed by the Vice-President for Young Researchers and Diversity Management, Prof. Dr. Uwe Cantner. About 450 new doctoral candidates start their PhD every year at the University in Jena. All in all there are 2540 German and international doctoral candidates in Jena (without the faculty of medicine).

At the event the focus was on the specific support offers for doctoral candidates of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena. New to the programme this year were topic tables, at which the doctoral candidates could talk about all topics related to their doctorate: e.g. "Doctorate only suited for lone fighters?", "Suddenly a lecturer - What is good teaching?" and "Writing - From a piece of white paper to the completed dissertation". The event gave doctoral candidates the chance to get in contact with each other to gain mutual benefits in the future.

The event aims on strengthening the welcoming culture at Friedrich Schiller University. By this event, the international doctoral candidates were welcomed in Jena - after all, every fifth doctoral candidate at the University in Jena comes from abroad.
