Conferences and Symposiums

The Graduate Academy regularly hosts conferences on topics relevant to the development of the doctoral phase and the postdoc phase.

Symposium: Zwischen Kompetenz, Erfahrung und Potenzial. Leistungsbeurteilung in Berufungs- und Evaluationsverfahren für Tenure Track-Professuren (Between competence, experience and potential. Performance assessment in appointment and evaluation procedures of Tenure Track Professors)

The introduction of tenure track professorships creates new challenges for the participating universities in assessing the performance of researchers. Due to their comparatively low academic age, applicants can no longer be assessed primarily on the basis of their prior achievements. Instead, competence and potential play a special role in assessing the performance. How can the scientific potential, teaching competence and leadership as well as management competence of young researchers be assessed in appointment procedures?
The symposium provided ideas on these topics through keynote speeches and practical examples. It was held in German.

Symposium: Fundiert Forschen (Profound Research)

During the qualification phase, doctoral candidates and postdocs become highly specialised experts on their field of research. At the same time though, they are presented with the challenge of having to collaborate with researchers from other subjects. For this reason, it is essential that they have a scientific foresight, an apprehension of other subject-specific cultures and a clear overview of the fundaments of their own discipline. But not only are these qualities essential for a productive cooperation among different disciplines: They also help to think outside the box regarding one own's research ideas, to reflect acurately upon the research methods and to teach others the bigger picture of research.
However, young researchers don't usually develop these skills just like that. Potentialities have to rather be created to ensure the training of these scientific key qualifications. But how can this be accomplished?
These were the key questions discussed at the symposium. The speakers represented scientific and funding organisations, science studies and graduate programmes. The symposium was open to everyone involved with the qualification of doctoral candidates or postdocs. It was held in German.

Symposium: Das deutsche Wissenschaftssystem und seine Postdocs (The German Academic System and its Postdocs)

The situation of postdocs in the German academic system is notable for its serious discrepancies, which are equally detrimental to universities and to young researchers. For young researchers, the postdoc phase is often synonymous with high levels of engagement with little gratification and existential insecurity. Universities, which should win over the best minds for academia, often lose highly talented and well-qualified postdocs to other areas of employment and to other countries. In order to combine the interests of academia and research, as well as the job requirements for postdocs, new basic concepts for personnel structures in the German academic system are desperately needed.
The participants of the symposium "The German Academic System and its Postdocs" discussed the perspectives of qualifications after a PhD. The conference was organised by the FSU's Graduate Academy in honour of the opening of the House for Young Researchers "Zur Rosen".

Conference: Perspektiven der strukturierten Doktorandenqualifikation (Perspectives on Structured Doctoral Qualifications)
Jena, 23-24 May 2008

This conference had the goal of imparting information on a structured doctoral education and to increase interest in these programmes. Its other goal was to serve as an exchange of opinions and experience between those concerned in order to receive new ideas and tips for improvement. Finally, there was a look at the future of structured doctoral programmes.
