Panel discussion „Publish or perish?"

Zeitraum: 16.01.2014 18:00 - 16.01.2014 19:30 Uhr

"Publish or perish" is a back number! More and more scientists post their articles on the Internet, more and more magazines and journals are available online, e-book is on the rise, the ideas of Popular Science Writing and Third Culture with their demand for vivid science is becoming increasingly attractive. Scientific publishing is on the move. However, what do these developments mean for young researchers? How can young researchers position themselves in this situation and develop a self-image as a scientific author?

These questions will be discussed at the panel discussion on 16 January in the auditorium of the house for young researchers. Sitting on the podium will be: Alexander Schmitz who is lector of the publisher Konstanz University Press and for whom the processes of change are directly noticeable; Patricia Gwozdz who as a doctorate at University Potsdam does research regarding the topic Popular Science Writing and wrote her dissertation on the topic "Homo acdamicus goes Pop"; Dr Florian Freistetter the astronomer who broke the traditional scientific career off and is currently publishing his research results for the general public; Professor Marcus Maurer who is a communication science researcher at Friedrich Schiller University Jena and thus for whom the publishing of research results is on the one hand job related and on the other hand a research area of his own field of expertise. The discussion will be moderated by Dr Peter Braun who is the head of Schreibzentrum SchreibenLernen at the University Jena.

The panel discussion is a part of the Core Research Theme series of the Graduate Academy. In this series, the Graduate Academy regularly highlights current interdisciplinary developments around the topics doctorate and the work as a young researcher. The event takes place in the auditorium at the house for young researchers "Zur Rosen" and begins at 6 pm. It will be in german.

The following day (17.01.14), a workshop "Der letzte Schliff - Lektorieren und Korrigieren von Doktorarbeiten für Geistes-, Kultur- und SozialwissenschaftlerInnen" of the Study Programme of the Graduate Academy follows. Referees are Dr. Peter Braun of "Schreibzentrum SchreibenLernen" together with Alexander Schmitz who is editor of "Konstanz University Press".
